Insimbi has grown and diversified over the years

Insimbi has undergone significant change since our humble beginnings in 1970. These developments have resulted in a much larger and more diversified group of companies than our founding members could ever have imagined.

Our early days

At our roots, Metallurg Inc (now Insimbi) was primarily concerned with the mining industry and the marketing of products such as grain refiners, tungsten carbide powders, Ferro molybdenum, Ferro titanium and welding powders. The company also represented independent producers of inoculants, nodulisers and calcium silicide.

Growth and diversification

Today, Insimbi provides resource-based commodities, such as ferrous and non-ferrous alloys, as well as refractory materials to a wide range of industries. Our most recent acquisition has catapulted us into the metals recycling business giving us a significant presence in the metals recycling arena.

Key dates in the growth and diversification of Insimbi

1970: Metallurg Inc (USA) establishes Metallurg SA in Johannesburg in 1970.

1992: The operation moved to its current premises in Wadeville, Germiston.

2003: The management of Metallurg SA enter into a new ownership agreement resulting in a break from Metallurg Inc. Langham Carter, Danny O’Connor, Pieter Schutte (all since retired), Fred Botha, Colin Botha and Eddy Liechti form the first executive management team of what will become Insimbi.

2005: Executive management rebranded the company as Insimbi Alloy Supplies (Proprietary) Limited.

2008: Acquired Insimbi Aluminium Alloys (PTY) Ltd (ex-Future Alloys)

2008: Insimbi Industrial Holdings Ltd listed on the AltX board of the Johannesburg Stock Exchange.

2009: Acquired Global Materials in Cape Town including 4000m² warehousing and office space.

2010: Acquired Metlite Alloys (Pty) Ltd in Cape Town.

2010: Purchased Insimbi Fibres Division (ex Mettaloy Fibres)

2011: Launched Insimbi’s Exports Division

2012: Migrated to the non-ferrous Industrial Metals sector on the main board of the Johannesburg Stock Exchange under the ticker ISB.

2015: Acquired Polydrum

2016: Acquired Amalgamated Metals Recycling (AMR).

2018: Acquired Group Wreck.

2019: Acquired Treppo Group.

2020: Sold Metlite Alloys (Pty) Ltd.

2023: Closed Insimbi Plastics.
